Arthur Tress make still life photos which are not as normal as most still life photos are. He doesn’t just arrange the objects in a nice way but makes them come to life as they were part of a play. During the making of his series ‘Fish Tank Sonata’ Arthur Tress was staying in a small cottage filled with collectibles and vintage items from the forties and fifties. These items fascinated Arthur and I wanted to make some still life photos with them. He wanted to use some sort of container as a setting for the items but he couldn’t find one. He went to some antique shops and eventually found a fish tank that belonges to the mother of the owner of one of the shops. This is how the series Fish Tank Sonata started. He published these photos in a book together with poems to accompany the images.
Besides ‘Fish Tank Sonata’ Arthur Tress has some other interesting still life projects like ‘Tea Pot Opera’ and ‘Hospital Constructions’. Have a look on his website.

After my grandfather’s dead my father started to sort my grandfather’s huge dia collection although he did not do this in a very organized way.. He kept all the dia’s featuring people and put the ones without any people in a huge bag. My grandfather made loads of photos of landscapes, houses, churches and old villages so that bag became a huge bag of dia’s. My father wanted to throw it away but fortunately I could keep it away from the garbage bin. So now I’m stuck with thousands of unsorted dia’s..
So, I have started to sort them in different categories: dreamy pictures, landscapes, villages and houses. I want to use the dreamy ones in a new project but I didn’t really know what to do with the other ones because they weren’t really interesting. Some time ago I made a double scan of some negatives and maybe I could do a similar thing with these uninteresting dia’s. So I have searched for dia’s that could give a nice effect when put together.
The results reminded me of the complexity how our brain manages memories. After a while you only remember the good things and interesting things that happened. Like a Christmas morning, a birthday when you got that book you always wanted, that wonderful forest you went to on vacation, the moment when a duck bit your sisters hand, or a mountain that looked like a giant. Often our brain mixes up memories, which is how I see this dia series. The photos are my grandfathers memories. He told me about some of these places but I never went there myself. In my mind my grandfathers vacations became a mixture of walking in beautiful landscapes and old villages.

In this new category I want to tell about things that fascinate me in life. This could be anything, from fascinating books to random things I notice while I’m taking a walk outside.
All my life I have lived near the dunes which I often visit. I think that started my interest in nature and biology. Sometimes I wonder whether I should have studied Biology instead of Photography. Not that I don’t like photography but sometimes I wish I knew a bit more about different sorts of plants, trees and animals. During biology lessons in high school I always was fascinated by the drawings of plants and their anatomy. Plants and flowers are a bit of art themselves. So many things happen in such a small thing. In my photography I also often use nature because the diversity keeps interesting me. When I was working on the iaminspired project I started to look for old drawings of plants because I wanted to use them in the publication of the series. These drawings started to fascinate me because they gave a realistic but still artistic insight into a plant. Last week I went to the second-hand store and found a book (‘Wat bloeit daar?’) from the 30’s about plants which included lots of drawings. In some way vintage botanical drawings interest me more than recent ones. I don’t really know why, maybe it’s the yellowed paper that fascinates me, maybe the faded colors.. Lately I saw a wonderful old book in the archives of a library which included lots of wonderful full colour prints that were glued in because at that time it was to expensive to print all the pages in colour itself. I hope one day I’ll find such a book in a second-hand store. Until then I have to do look for botanical images in my ‘wat bloeit daar’ book or on pinterest…
